For the first time in years, Liverpool will start the Premier League seasonwithout the feeling that this could finally be their year.Yes, the new manager, Roy Hodgson has swept into Anfield and installed a little bit of confidence and belief back into the players and fans and yes, the arrival of Joe Cole has shown that despite the lack of Champions League football, Liverpool is still an attractive destination for top-cla s players but after last season, expectations have definitely dropped.Jamie Carragher has already outlined that Liverpool are not aiming for the title this season. Liverpool fans have accepted that fourth place is the target and with last seasons top three unwilling to budge along with the big spending Manchester City and Harry Redknapps Tottenham becoming more and more competitive with every season, the once big four is fast becoming a big six and Aston Villa and Everton are sure to be knocking hard on the door. You have to say that if any of those six is likely to mi s out, it will be Liverpool.Liverpools transfer activity has been positive. The arrival of Joe Cole is a signal of real intent from Roy Hodgson that he wants to push back into the Champions League. Milan Jovanovic, left winger when Fernando Torres is fit, centre forward when Torres inevitably breaks down injured, is another positive addition to the squad. Danny Wilson and Jonjo Shelvey, definitely signed for the future, are two of Great Britains biggest young talents and show that Hodgson is building a team that will last for years to come. In terms of players leaving, there have been no real shocks. Yo si Benayoun and Albert Riera, both were disenchanted after disputes with Rafael Benitez and despite the end of his tenure, the players were already on their way out of the door. The biggest positive for Liverpool is obvious, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will be wearing a red shirt come the 15th august. Gerrard is a talismanic figure for any Liverpool player or fan, he was not at his best last season but can any Liverpool player other than Pepe Reina say that they had a good season? Torres had a poor World Cup but hopefully hislack ofgame timein the semi-final and final could work to his advantage as he will hopefully be fresher and ready to play a solid season for the club that adores him. Any Liverpool fan knows that when Torres and Gerrard play well, Liverpool win and Hodgson knows how important the Andre Burakovsky Men Jersey captain and his star striker are going to be to any Liverpool succe s over the next couple of seasons.Forget the impending departure of Javier Mascherano, players like Mascherano are replacable. Admittedly, Mascherano is probably the best at his craft in the world (Although the likes of Cambia so and Van Bommel might have something to say about that) but one thing Rafael Benitez did leave behind was Mascheranos long term succe sor in the universally underrated Lucas who i feel will become a much more popular player in years to come as his experience and ability grow. This season really is Lucas chance to shine, if Mascherano does leave,as the argentine has indicated he would like to do so, Lucas will fill his boots. I may be wrong but i find it unlikely that Hodgson would use the 25-30m on a central midfielder with Gerrard, Lucas and Aquilani capable of playing there when there are positions such as left back, right wing and centre forward that are crying out for a new talent to fill them.Liverpool fans can cope with the manager putting out weakened opposition in the Carling Patrick Roy Women Jersey Cup, they can cope with not progre sing far in the FA Cup, they can even handle European elimination but one thing they cannottake is a poor league showing and if there is one piece of advice I could give to Roy Hodgson, it would be this.Last season was awful for any Reds fan and the defeat against Arsenal at Anfield just before christmas was one of the lowest of the many low points that they endured. Hodgson has the chance to start with a high. You have to feel that the fixture computer has given Liverpool two games (Arsenal (H), Manchester City (A)) in the first two weekends that will define their season, pick up 4 or 6 points and who knows what Roys men can achieve, Pick up 1 or even 0 points and who knows how low the club can sink. In my opinion, Liverpools season will be decided in the first week just as i feel it was last year defeated by Tottenham and Villa in the space of 8 days, it set the tone for what was to come.Liverpool fans are ,arguably, the best in the world and this season is their time to show the team that last season is forgiven.Liverpool willprosper if the fans get behind the team and make Anfield a fortre s that it had been for years until last season. This season will be make or break.
